ORACLE TIMESTEN

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database (TimesTen) is a full-featured, memory-optimized, relational database with persistence and recoverability. It provides applications with the instant responsiveness and very high throughput required by database-intensive applications. Deployed in the application tier, TimesTen operates on databases that fit entirely in physical memory (RAM). Applications access the TimesTen database using standard SQL interfaces. For customers with existing application data residing on the Oracle Database, TimesTen is deployed as an in-memory cache database with automatic data synchronization between TimesTen and the Oracle Database.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is a full-featured relational database that runs in the application tier, storing all data in main memory. This dramatically reduces latency and increases throughput.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database (TimesTen) delivers real-time performance by changing the assumptions around where data resides at runtime. By managing data in memory, and optimizing data structures and access algorithms accordingly, database operations execute with maximum efficiency, achieving dramatic gains in responsiveness and throughput, even compared to a fully cached disk-based RDBMS. TimesTen can be embedded within the applications to further improve performance of database operations by eliminating inter-process communication and network overheads.

TimesTen is commonly deployed with multi-user and multi-threaded applications using row-level locking and read-committed isolation. Applications access TimesTen databases using standard SQL via JDBC, ODBC, ODP.NET, OCI (Oracle Call Interface), Pro*C/C++, and Oracle PL/SQL programming interfaces. While the best response time is achieved with TimesTen running in-process with the application (also known as “direct mode”), conventional client/server access is commonly used when a database is shared by several applications running on different servers.

TimesTen databases are persistent and recoverable. Durability is achieved through a combination of transaction logging and database checkpointing to disk.

High Availability is provided using TimesTen Replication to replicate transactions between TimesTen databases in real-time. TimesTen Replication uses memory-optimized, transaction log-based replication technology over a network efficient and stream-based protocol for high performance, reliability, and robustness. Key features include:

Asynchronous replication, providing maximum performance, and completely decoupling the application from the subscriber receipt process of replicated elements;
Synchronous replication, providing a higher level of confidence for data consistency between the active and standby databases; the application is blocked until the replicated transaction has been both received and committed on the standby database;
Hot read availability of the standby database; additional read capacity can be provided by configuring additional read-only subscribers;
Parallel replication for applications that require very high transaction throughput;
Automated failure detection and failover to the standby database, achieved by seamless integration with Oracle Clusterware;
Online upgrades, allowing individual servers to be taken offline for software upgrades, while other servers continue uninterrupted.

The Oracle TimesTen Data Manager daemon, which is the Oracle TimesTen Data Manager service on Windows, starts when TimesTen is installed. The daemon operates continually in the background.

The TimesTen daemon performs the following functions:

Manages shared memory access

Coordinates process recovery

Keeps management statistics on what data stores exist, which are in use, and which application processes are connected to which data stores

Manages RAM policy

Starts replication processes, the TimesTen Server and the cache agent.

Application developers do not interact with the daemon directly. No application code runs in the daemon and application developers do not generally have to be concerned with it. Application programs that access TimesTen data stores communicate with the daemon transparently using TimesTen internal routines.
